What code is my 21D?

Post by Squid »

In looking over the variation table for the 21D, I'm a bit confused. The variations are to the axle braces, mixer pin, ladder, rear platform, and hole in the base or not. All I can say for sure is that mine has the thin platform and a hole in the base. The ladder looks straight to me, but after having viewed the picture, I'm not so sure. What, exactly, do I have here?

Roland, I believe that the ladder tapers at the top rear. Thus the confusion. My 21D also does not have the braces at the rearmost mudguard.

First things Squid, Nick's table on this Mixer has never been updated to add the information YellowFoden and I have been researching for 2 years now. For a Regular Wheel casting that was only produced from May of 1968 till being converted to a Superfast model some time during 1971, this Mixer sure had many casting changes done on it.
In looking at your model, it has the straight ladder top, The last style double braced axle supports, the bottom base hole as you said, and the plastic barrel pin with a round and non tapered hole in the body casting to hold it. Your rear picture of your Truck was taken too high to see the rear fender supports it may or may not have, so I cannot give you any information on which of the 3 styles of them you may have.
Nick's listings are quite different from Mike Stannard's 1985 Guide to Lesneys, and both sources are not very detailed on some obvious casting differences on this Cement Truck. This may not answer all of your questions, but your Mixer is Nick's code 3 as they are now written, and is also a Stannard code 3.
I have 14 different codes now in our collection of this Regular Wheel 21D Mixer. I believe YellowFoden may have even more casting differences that he has found since we last compared notes that will lead to even more cataloging differences not covered by Nick on this one. (We detailists are way too picky on some small points and castings. Some like my Wife say we may need to get a real life......LOL) kwakers

I had another look at the page for the 21D, and I do indeed have a code 3. Thanks for helping identify it as such, kwakers!

You are Very Welcome Squid! Be careful..... YellowFoden's details on this Cement Truck have made it one of my favorite Lesneys to closely inspect now when I see them at Toy Shows or even see them listed on E Bay. I can find no remedy for this reflex, it has now become an addiction. Be very careful on these Mixers.... ;) kwakers

Hello Squid, Roland and Dick,
Thanks Roland for adding the link for Squid, hopefully it explains why the damaged ladder messes with the variation table.
Squid, I like your comment on the earlier post that you "like the grill on the front of the 21d"...not sure why I would say that ;) :D .
The model you have shown is actually quite interesting and will explain a bit more if you can post a clear photo of the rear ( like the one above but focussed on plastic pin ) showing the pivot pin hole. It looks to be straight sides. The very last ones have a tapered hole.
Look forward to seeing the next pic.
Bert

ps, Dick any chance of trading some 40 plus degree temp for some of your cooler weather?

Believe it or not, our upstate New York temperatures have been abnormally high all this Winter because the Arctic winds have shifted the cold right around us and taken the cold air further South. This leaves us with eastern Ocean temperatures affecting our area, so it is now a nice 'roof working' temperature of 40 degrees F here during the day. For Feb. 7, that is very warm. I am sure that would be a relief to you right now, so sure, we can trade all the not so cold air you may need to stay comfortable....We are doing just fine up here in the Cave..... ;) Dick

Nothing happens until Nick updates the pages and codes on this 21D Mixer Miller. Lately it seems like most new casting details may not be added into the online Guide, but we never can tell. YellowFoden and I have closely followed this Truck's many changes, but it is still a work "In progress" till we complete a new updated variation table for Nick to approve. Till then we have some fun and use the Guide "As Is"...... kwakers
