That is a fascinating audio clip and I will try and convert it to a printed version, but please if someone else knows of a very quick way to do this, please do.

Very interesting to listen to, to work at the Lesney factory might sound a like a dream job but the reality was long low paid hours sitting beside a conveyor belt. We would not have had so many memorable Christmases and birthdays if it hadn't been for these hard working ladies. Hats off to them!!

It basically describes how women would work in teams to dump the models out of bins onto assembly line belts. They Would then pick the sprue (excess metal from the molding process) and place the good toys on one belt and the excess metal on the other belt. Any models with parts that failed to form, were damaged when picking off the sprue or otherwise imperfect were placed on the line with the scrap (to be melted down and reused). It goes on to describe that they were paid by piece work. In other words, paid according to the volume of good castings that moved along the belt for further processing. It was labor intensive, hard work and those who had a good team could make good money.

I would assume that the parts placed on the good belt would go to the fettling process next.

Interesting audio clip. Makes sense that we now discover those 'oops' models with sprue pieces or faults that would have got through this process.
She says that they wore leather gloves so it must have been hard to remove small pieces.

Though the one that was posted, is the only one of a Lesney factory worker. However, the others make for interesting listening, as well.

The beginning of this video clip appears to show the process that the woman was describing in the audio clip. A conveyor with six women on each side, and two at the end. Interesting, note that only the third woman down on each side seem to be wearing the gloves, perhaps their particular task was a might harder on the hands

Gloves may have been good from a safety point of view when dealing with sharp metal edges but they would really hinder speed and dexterity. Given they were paid piece rate, it seems natural the women may choose to use bare hands. Gloves may have been a choice in those days, I don't know but if not, the supervisors may have just turned a blind eye.

As a new member of the workforce she would have been issued with gloves for her particular job and would ware them until she got the hang of things, then they would have sat in her locker.
