Hi all, just had a look at prices of some of the matchbox in yesterday 's auction, some high prices. The star lot was the Wreck Truck hammer price £5600 plus 25%. a bit out of my pocket money. Pete

Even if all 800 forum members put £5 into a kitty to secure one for the forum, we still could not buy it...

Amazed it went straight in at that price - did this mean there was an under bidder on it ? or do Vectis just stick in your highest offer you send in.

Hi Ghostie if we had all chipped in £8.75 each we could have brought it. I 've often wondered whether Vectis kick off with the highest bid first. I think with some auctions you have got to be in the room Pete.

At the auctions I've attended (mainly in Germany), if more than one bid is received via the Internet or otherwise they will be clocked-up to the highest bidder and then offered to the room. This makes sense. If there is only one absent bidder he goes with the bids in the room until his maximum is achieved or he wins.

I'd be quite happy to put forward my £8.75, but how do you share One model between 800 collectors...

So as I understand it Rod there was room bidding upto the 5600 which was the highest bid and the only one that appeared online. It must have been bloody fast bidding as it appeared online very quickly, only other answer was earlier bids were offered before auction upto this amount so only that high one was shown.

Hi Ghostie If we had all chipped in & brought it we could have all owned it for one week, it would have only took 16 years, elderly members first then down to the youngest. Any new members would have to wait until another one comes up. I spoke to another one of our members who had a bid on it but dropped out at £4000,i think this model had been sold about 8 years ago Pete

Rod, That process at these type of auctions would make sense -- especially if someone put in an "absent bid" in advance of the auction. Otherwise, they would always pay their top price bid.
In general, the prices on Matchbox items at this Vectis auction seemed to be on the higher side of "current market" (always evolving). The 25% premium certainly adds on a steep fee for the auction. Always interesting to see what items are going for..................11
