Baseplate Names .
After seeing the #15 Tippax refuse collector being called a Dennis refuse collector I wondered how many other models in the line up are misrepresented in the variation table . There are a heap . Why are they not simply known by the number and description on the base . Do any other Variation catalogues do this , and if so why ?

Calling that model a Dennis is not really a misrepresentation, for that is the correct brand name of the real vehicle. Tippax is just a model designation.
On some models the baseplate name is either missing or incomplete, so for those you have no other choice but to use some extended or entirely made up model name. Also it often makes sense to mention the brand name of a vehicle even if it is not found on the baseplate, since many people are looking for models of vehicles of a certain brand.
Furthermore model names found on boxes, in catalogues or elsewhere often differ from those found on baseplates, so if somebody sees a picture of a model in a catalogue or online but does not have it in hand to inspect the baseplate, it is logical that he or she will use that other name that is visible to him or her.
I recommend using the model naming standard as introduced by Geoffrey Leake, i.e. specifying the actual name as cast on the baseplate in all uppercase letters, with any extensions in mixed-case lettering or in parentheses. I have adhered to this standard in most of the listings I have produced, and I think it makes sense.
