Here's a nice Custom Ford GT 40 with wire wheels. I've done her up in the metallic candy red (just like an XKE) and given her some racing stripes and a nice offset roundel.
Dear Tinman, this really looks like a works GT40, the wires really doing it.
The reason I love GT40's goes back to the year 1966. I was with my mother, doing shopping in a town some 25 km from our home.
I had 1 Dutch guilder pocket money burning in my hands. We were waiting for the bus to get us home. I used the few minutes left for the bus to arrive to go into a bookshop, and I bought a magazine for 95 cents. It was called Autorevue. Inside the magazine was the report of the 1966 24h of Le Mans, Ford GT40 (MKII) winning 1,2 and 3. I was sold on these cars ever since.
It's said that there are one or more pre-pro's out there, of the GT 40, with wire wheels. I'm sure Lesney went with the plastic hubs for cost reasons, but the wires sure looked good on this model! When the Ferrari Berlinetta first came out, the metallic red was tested on the model (with wire wheels). It makes me wonder if the red was also tested on the GT 40.
