A rather dear empty box this sold at $148-17us this week, some of the boxes are worth a lot more than the models.

No empty container will ever be more valuable than the model it contained ... that's been my opinion in the past, still the same today, and I don't see it changing for me in the future. The rest of you are welcome to value the cardboard at whatever insane prices you want. I collect matchbox models and if the cardboard comes along with it, fine. Loose models are just fine too. I guess the day when cardboard discussions outnumber the model discussions is they day I quit. I never watched a child push a box across the floor with joy. Curmudgeon rant over.

But then Joe some collectors find the pleasure in collecting the boxes as well as the models I for one.

Where as you find your pleasure in doing repaints and fakes, which would not interest me under any circumstances.

George, of course your observations are correct about people enjoying the hobby in different ways.

Just as some show their disdain for my copy cat restored models, I am merely showing my disdain for grossly inflated cardboard prices. I mean no disrespect to any individuals and/or their personal collecting preference and in fact stated my personal opinion about the high prices and not about the pleasure or collecting practices of anyone. No where in your post did I read that you had bought the box or were bidding on the box. No where in my post did I express anything negative about the collecting styles of others and specifically noted my own personal opinions on cardboard prices.

When it comes to my restorations and recreations, I take a ton of heat from a bunch of people and this goes on year in and year out (and people have been attacking me on this subject for years). Some noted individuals have even decided that they should blast me on their web sites and take me to task for how I enjoy the hobby. I guess it's impossible for me to express my own opinion on any issue without continuing to be harassed about my personal preference on how I enjoy the hobby? Now, I feel dragged into another personal attack about how I enjoy the hobby and by someone I greatly respect and consider a friend. And, it has all been done under of the guise of accusing me of attacking others enjoyment?!! I'm sorry, I guess I expect too much with my hopes to be treated as an equal and I certainly didn't expect to be singled out and lectured for posting my personal opinion on a subject.

My understanding is that Joe does not do fakes and that he has (fortunately) never been attracted to the dark side. On the basis of what Joe has written in the past, his restored models can easily be distinguished from original factory products by even those with only limited knowledge of what they are looking at.

Couldn't agree more Hugh. Repainted or Restored is a far more fitting description of Joes work. 'Fakes' they are not.

They would only become fakes if there is a deliberate intention on the part of the 'faker' to deceive another person into believing that they were original. I do not think that description applies to Joe IMHO.

I did not say that Joe was trying to deceive any body with his repaints but to my way of thinking they are still (Fakes)

If you cannot afford the genuine model then go with-out, as you are only fooling your self with a repaint in your cabinet.

That is my view and I don't think I am the only one about this (sorry) also my view on people who make reproduction fake boxes.

I am one of Joe's biggest fans, and love to see the vehicles that he comes out with, and his opinion of the real FAKES. I think that I have got a couple of his and Barnabe's (I think that's how it's spelt) re-creations in my collection. They are ones that I will probably never own the real thing. Now on to the discussion at hand. I collect the box's, and love them just as much as the vehicles that are/were in them. to me it makes the vehicle complete as it was when they came out. I get every box that I can because they are harder to get than most vehicles.
