I am hoping someone can help me identify this matchbox Model A.











I have not been able to find any NFL specialty issues of Matchbox models. Also, the model curiously is stamped NHL C 1971. The base is copyright 1978 and says Made in China. I didn't think Chinese manufacturing happened before 1982.

Also, now that I have been educamated here, both rivets look odd to me.

Hello Kevin.

Your Van is one of numerous Lesney 'Code 1' status models produced to promote sporting events or teams. It was available from White Rose Collectibles, York, P.A. who were officially sanctioned to make these models as promotionals.

Yours has the modified baseplate with the inserted panel allowing for a more descriptive description. Production was in China (despite what it may show on the baseplate), and you may be surprised to hear me say, those rivets are fine and very typical of the finish from this period.

An earlier version for the 1990 season was of Macau production.

Thanks as always for the great, quick and interesting information. Regarding the rivets, like the kid in the movie Sixth Sense, I see drill holes everywhere!
