Casting #51
Re: Casting #51
George, Is the orange 51c with Pointer labels an actual factory release or an accident/one-off? Still looking for the white grille version. They don't come up often. Great pics. Jay

I've always had my doubts about this one. What do others think? Can anyone provide shop-bought provenance?mbox2000 wrote:George, Is the orange 51c with Pointer labels an actual factory release or an accident/one-off?

I bought my Orange model Pointer from a well known dealer about 1992, and he is still going today. I paid no more for it than the Yellow Douglas model at the time as I bought that one as well.
I have seen this one for sale quite a few times, and as the Pointer label was issued last there could have been a few Orange models left in storage, and not to waste any money Matchbox just used them up, after all these were only sold as toys and knowing Matchbox any thing is possible when it comes to money (profit).

Rook DeCoster, a well-regarded Chicago-area collector, has the orange truck with "Pointer" labels that he insists he bought straight from the hobby shop himself as a boy. Rook is a straight shooter. I have no reason to doubt this variation's authenticity.
If you look closely in this picture I took at Rook's house a couple of years back you'll see the orange dump truck in the far upper left corner.

Hello Hugh well the post from Greg (molars) must have put your doubts aside about the Orange Pointer, I see you have not commented about the post as yet.

Yes, I'm more than happy with that as provenance for this variation, and I therefore hereby completely and unequivocally withdraw my doubts!kerbside wrote:Hello Hugh well the post from Greg (molars) must have put your doubts aside about the Orange Pointer, I see you have not commented about the post as yet.

Please use a web hosting site (like photobucket) to store pictures so you can post them here, using attachments makes it hard to view the pictures when you have to scroll to see them. Seeing comparisons of models is hard to see with attachments too.
