290 Double Decker bus Dunlop complete creme!

Post by MrGoodies »

Hi,
have found a complete creme 290 Double Decker bus with 3rd type grille and Dunlop - The world´s master tyre printed on.
It has red painted wheels with the M tyres. There is no -290- number on base!
Ever seen these in red/creme or green/creme and this looks strange to me.
Its original, no repaint, coming from the attic of a former tyre representant in the 50´s and 60´s here in Germany.
Something special??

Have fun

Hi,
Yes can we have some pictures please!
The all cream 29c / 290 is certainly out there, and has been seen in both Type 2 and Type 3 versions. They don't appear to be an error, so may be a limited run for some reason? Nonetheless it is a very hard to find version.

Will post pictures later that day.

Have read about that model, that 2 all creme models was sold in the bay the last years and both
came from the Berlin area. So thinking of a small run for Berlin distributor in those days in complete
creme, because of the same colours of the BVG company with Berlin double-deck buses around!?!
I forgot, my model also came from Berlin......!

Thank you Wolfgang, Excellent pictures. It is a stunning example in really good condition. I do not collect these but are aware of them and looking at the paintwork on my laptop's screen makes it appear original, just enough 'patina' from old age (not you Wolfgang, the model... :D ), and I would not be supprised that in the hand it would classed as a totally original model and not a particularly common variation in all-Cream.

If I do have an issue with it, it is the 'DUNLOP' signage, I can not see the edges of the carrier film which should show up as an amber coloured area all around the Dunlop etc name, if it is there, its just not showing up on my computer.

The Dunlop signage is printed, not a transfer.
Hope that makes it clearer.

Thank you Wolfgang. I see it does not have '290' on the base, thinking it may be #29c instead (as it also has the front of roof 'Box', lots of these #290 buses do not have this), but the top deck's front facing windows appear to be of the larger size putting it in the 1957-58 production period, ruling out the #29c version!

This model needs further investigation as the original castings date back to the late 1930's and has been modified several times to create different bus versions.

Dinky is well known for making special coloured promos of Triumph Herald, Mini Countryman and Triumph 2000 in 1960s so no reason why this bus wasnt made for Dunlop in late 1950s when they used this printing of ads technique - late casting, largest upper deck front windows

Lovely model,
Looks completely correct from here. The Berlin connection stands up as a few of these have been sourced from there. Likely to be a special made up for the German importer for Meccano. Having said that this must be the easiest special Dinky ever made, a negative variation in fact, as all these were sprayed all over cream first then masked for the red / green overcoat. Luckily there is a photo of the assembly process at Binns Rd that shows just that.
