VBD Auctions

Post by nickjones »

It occurred to me that now that we are on our own webspace there are no rules any more, So what are your thought on us adding an auction room to this forum, auction your model for only 20p, would you use it ?.

I remember the last auction that never happened ... what a mess that was.
It might be time to start my "Bucket List."

Yes for the htf variations that attract bids from our membership- common items never sell here unless given away! The last auction was a bust because the toys were low value common models in playworn condition often in repro or tatty boxes.

True, but there were several big personalities involved.
Provided the bidding process is transparent, I see no reason not to give it a go. If it works, great. If it doesn't, then we're simply back where we are now having lost nothing in the process. So it's everything to gain, nothing to lose.

I would definitely give it a try. I do get occasional 'rarer than average' models (e.g. white grilled pipe truck) in playworn condition that I can't expect one extra penny for in my etsy shop because most who buy from me are not collectors. I had intended putting them into 'Marketplace' but am a bit cautious about valuations due to my relative lack of knowledge compared to most forum members. An auction would solve that issue for me :D

Could you please put some meat on the bones of your proposal, Nick? How do you see this working in practice? How would bids be made? Would auctions run for a fixed time (like Ebay) or simply finish when the seller felt like it?

That would be a great idea - I'd suggest installing an auction plugin for phpBB - if Nick needs help with that he can PM me.

That way there will be a private VBD auction system for members only, I think that would be awesome :)

There are two possiblities:
  • find a plugin that works - i found out a few that might work - need to test them out!
  • install a separate auction system (like eBay) as another folder, but that way new registrations will be a must. Unless I manage to figure out a bridge for the MySQL database
Let me know if I can help you out on that, I know php pretty well and have worked with phpBB, IPB and vB powered boards from ages (before moving onto making my own forum software), I'll be more than happy to assist and help you guys out.

Anyway that's just a suggestion and an idea.
