Early Lesney Massey Harris Tractor

Post by antoinecalleja »

Hello,
I was looking on ebay today and saw this early Lesney Tractor. I am not sure about whether it is original or not. From the screws on the rear wheels it does not look original, but I am not sure if this was another variation. Anyone can help me please? I asked the seller and he told me that it is 100% original, but I wasn't convinced.

This is the link on ebay:

Thanks and kind regards,

Antoine

It looks to me as if the original screws have gone missing and somebody has adapted it with a similar sized threaded stud and hexagonal nut and they have lessened the impact by painting it in a similar colour, which for me is not an exact match. Most of these Tractors do not have the fixing screw painted the same colour as the rear wheels, but I am not an expert on these early Lesney models, but that is my view on this particular example.

The Massey Harris that was marketed in the UK had the rear wheels permanently riveted to the rear axle, The one marketed in the USA had the rear wheels held on by a screw and it is believed it was so the wheels could be fitted when the model had arrived in the USA and it would save on shipping space (and cost).
This is the first one I have seen with nuts to hold the wheels on, I do not think they are original.

No totally original. I have the same but my nuts are not painted (thank God said the wife !!) I have seen many with nuts or screws attaching the rear wheels but not so many with riveted axles.

I just checked the last 40 odd Vectis sales and they were approximately 50/50 screws or rivets,
None were nuts so I can only assume the nuts were only used on the Australian issues.
