21d Foden smooth barrel. pre-pro or new code 1 ?

Post by yellowfoden »

Hello Nick and all,

This is possibly my most important 21d find alongside the crimped barrel pin version in the development of this model and I would like to share on the forum. This one has the smooth plastic concrete barrel as apposed to the standard version that has ribs or braces.

It can’t have been too long after these were made that they decided to add the six ribs or brace lines to strengthen the barrel that then became the standard for the 21d.

The features are basically the same as the Stannard and Nicks code 1 apart from the barrel.

I am not sure how many smooth barrels were made and how many actually made it onto engineer models , pre-pro models or production run models.

Very nice yellow foden, I have looked for a long time. Thankyou for showing this model , as you say very limited amount of these out there.

Thanks Jason,
If I see another I shall let you know.
I know in a models development a couple of trays of the diecast components has been suggested so far as numbers go.
It would be interesting to know numbers of the trial plastic components, eg windscreens, interiors and in this case smooth barrel before actual production begins.
The fun part is to see how many may have survived

Interesting and fun! I didn't even know this smooth barrel variation even existed until now. It sounds as if that one found its way to a home where it will be genuinely appreciated for the rarity it is! What is the story behind you acquiring the model? That must have been a fun moment of discovery.

Another Great discovery on the 21D, this one seeming the rarest with that smooth barrel. A very exciting find when Jason can't show us his example.....Perhaps Antonin?? :D I must now look through my own spares and I may have to 'shop' for my own. kwakers

I seem to remember the picture, not Christine's name, and unfortunately not the smooth construction of both of their plastic barrels. J intimated he had been looking for one, so now I know why! Great reference Nick, I better copy it this time around......kwakers

So would this mean that the one shown in the book about making Matchbox toys that Lesney produced years ago was a smooth barrel ?

nice find...ill have to check mine to see if im lucky enough to have one and not know it...im sure i wont find one in my collection
Please use a web hosting site (like photobucket) to store pictures so you can post them here, using attachments makes it hard to view the pictures when you have to scroll to see them. Seeing comparisons of models is hard to see with attachments too.

Hi Steve, The only Matchbox toy book published by Lesney that I know of would be Mike and the modelmakers which is all drawings ?,
