55b Ford Fairlane Police Car

Post by Idris »

The NAMC’s “Catalog of all Series Matchbox Models” (first edition) has 55-2a as dark blue body, GPW, c/a, whilst variation 55-2b is dark blue body, GPW, r/a. (Note that the latter appears to provide corroboration of Antonin's example.) If verified, these two models would slot into Nick's variation table as codes 1 and 2 respectively.
The AIM “1-75 Series Regular Wheels” catalogue (second printing, 1983) lists variation 55-2a (the dark blue body variant) as having larger diameter wheels than the other variations. Since this is not reflected in any other listing, it is probably erroneous.
Neither Houghton nor Stannard list any variations not already covered by Nick, and U.K. Matchbox did not cover the model.

Bob dropped the listing of the dark blue Police Car with crimped axles in his second printing, but kept the GPW with dark blue body in his listings. This variation only had one dot after it, meaning Bob did not have the GPW variation in his own collection. Perhaps he had decided the crimped axle variation he originally published was actually a pre-pro piece never sold in stores to the public? kwakers

Hi Dick.
Antonin showed us a very playworn 55b in dark blue gloss with gpw that he has in his collection.

I like the fact that you are waiting for confirmation of both variations Nick, and that is now advertised at your site. Hopefully more can be found so we can add them both to your online Guide once they have each been confirmed. I had missed Antonin's Post, what a Great rare Police Car with those GPW on it.......WOW  kwakers
Does Antonin also have one with that white roof dome from the Fire Chief's Car on it's roof?? kwakers

It could not be in a better home Nick........Why not have it pictured at your site to try and 'draw out' others that are hidden away by miserly old Stannard Clutching collectors (Like Myself!!)...... kwakers

Hi Dick
Unfortunatelly I have no Police Car with white roof dome. I am enclosing some more photos of dark blue Police car with GPW. Please note, there is no silver trim and the dark blue painting has slightly different shade.
