Hello Mike, it's a Standard Vangaurd made by 'METTOY' and yes the Vangaurd was a British make of car.

Your version of the Vangaurd was available from 1950 to 1954. It is not particularly rare, but is not seen as much as the companion Rolls-Royce from the same range.
