'MY' London.

Post by GHOSTHUNTER »

Please enjoy this film of 'MY' London. This is how I remember London in 1970 despite visiting it during the 1960's, when I was too young to know what I was looking at!

Best viewed in full-screen.

Great isn't it. I did my apprenticeship in The Old Kent Road (SE15) in '73 and it had changed a fair bit by then, but remember the visits to London Zoo in the mid '60's as a kid, and it was pretty much like this film.

Pop into High Wycombe, Bucks on the way and I'll catch a lift with you Alex, there are several toys I want to buy from some of those shops.

Oh my God - my working area for British telecom. I rolled a car down that Hyde Park underpass, hit a patch of black ice at the first bend and totally lost it and rolled 3 times. Worked in Trafalgar square and all round that area up to Southwark bridge. So many buses and taxis and less cars around in those days and used to race through in our 3 ton Telecom trucks. The bit you don't see is more interesting as there is a another whole world underground in this area around 300 foot down and you hear the Underground running above you. Most Londoners do not realise what is under their feet in Whitehall etc. Buck house is absolutely beautiful inside and Churchill's war rooms are interesting. Great to look across London in a dead straight line in a tunnel as big as the underground but below it !

Oh yes, were gonna be a rockin in our little time machine Alex, great stuff. I might still have some 'Ultra Ban 5000' in me cupboard to keep us cool. I've also still got some 'Opal Fruits' we can share between us, oh wow man, this is gonna freak me out...

Could always go to a Gary Glitter concert but don't be to young !! Amazes me how few cars there are around as I seem to remember traffic jams up Piccadilly. Used to hang out around Eros in the 60's when clubbing all weekend - Ham yard and the Scene, breakfast at either the bowling alley or the café - great music, even better women.
I did go to the premier of Star Wars in Leiscester Sq. and then went out and bought the whole set of figures for the boy who promptly destroyed them - he now knows what they are worth !!

Some wonderful memories there Mick, I also went to the Star Wars premiers, all three, but the last one (The Return of the Jedi), was at Marble Arch, but I didn't rush out and buy any action figures, I weren't into soldiers, dolls or action figures of any type, I would rather spend the money on the books and magazines for the films!

Gary Glitter...Hmm, what can you say, loved his act and his music, best let sleeping Dogs lie.

Traffic in that film does look a little thin on the ground compaired to other films I've seen, but it is how I remember it, becoming busier in fact during the Eighties and the reason I took a vow saying..."I would never drive myself in or around London", only to end up driving a recovery truck in and around London during the Nineties and Noughties...!!

Many many thanks for posting this Ghosty.

I wonder what Taxi is that at 4.45 on the left untill 5.05. Is that prewar? A big Daimler (if I am right) is driving behind it.
I think the same vehicle is at Picadilly circus at 7.30.
There is only one Bentley at 5.56 on the right and one Rolls Royce at 10.40.
If you would travel the same distance today you would see at least 15 Rolls Royce and Bentley cars !
There are far more common cars in this video then you would see there today.
However I think at 18.45 there is a Aston Martin at the left and I also like the blue 3 wheeler on the left a few seconds later. Is that the same mark of vehicle as once featured in top gear?

I also like the green 714 busline to Luton at 5.40

The jaguars are the most superb and the ones to have. Real classic cars and outstanding to every other car else.
When did this go wrong?
A Jaguar is still a good car to have but it does not so outstanding compared to other cars as it did in this movie.
