Genuine or Fake?

Post by Idris »

Was this a bargain or a fake, deliberately planted right at the back of a group photograph?

Interesting lot simply because I don't see how seven playworn "Matchbox" models can be priced at £162, regardless of the model at the back!!

Auction started at 99p Ghostie as a junk lot so at the end bid price of GBP162 if the tan crane is genuine then they got a huge bargain.

Good evening,
I saw this lot, too, and saved this auction as a favorite in my browser to see what price this lot will fetch.
For me the paint looks too pale brown. This tan shade reminds me of the #46a Morris. The paint of the other models in this picture looks correct so I would not say this tan shade is because of a bad quality picture.
The only thing that let me think this #30 Magirus COULD be genuine is that it is not a top restored example, as often seen on ebay.
I guess this one is a fake. May be somone from the forum won this auction and will solve this riddle.

Happy collecting,
Linus

I was watching this too and like Linus I thought the colour was wrong, too pale. Plenty of bidders were convinved though. The seller has had no activity for some time and the feedback makes interesting reading. They have sold some harder to find models in the past but I was sceptical that this may have been a mistaken purchase from the past that was now being offered up.

Yes, but why was it not highlighted in the description and left up to the bidders to suggest the model is maybe genuine and why did the seller not wonder why he was getting such a high price for seven old playworn models, surely you would wonder which model is so dearly wanted.

I have not looked so don't know, but if this seller is a regular he/she must have at least checked a few books to see if anything was a bit special, I find it strange such a model would be sold in this way bundled in with less desirable models if it is genuine, or they simply don't know anything about these models and that's when the bells should start ringing because of the high price of what to all intense and purposes is a bundle of junk!

John's infomartion is interesting. The seller seems to have good knowledge in the regular wheels series and he sold all of his harder to find RW's in single auctions.
So why should he sell a genuine tan #30 Magirus in a lot with some playworn, more common Rw's. (maybe except for the bedford van with bpw and the "Players Please" double decker, but the conditions.....hmpf :? )

Looking at this further, isn't this the same seller we had a discussion about (on befora?) about some of his offerings eg 28b with gpw?

I had this on my watch list until I read the sellers feedback and like Johnboy thought it interesting that the seller had many htf models listed properly, but such a well known rarity as this stuck at the back of this lot. The description of the lot as 'scrap' seemed to be arse-covering and I'd be gob smacked if it's the real deal.
