I have always found the quality of the riveting on the 55b and 59b to be poor, with wobbly bases commonplace (and even a few bases which are loose at one end or the other). However, these particular rivets do look particularly chewed.
How secure is the base?

Not very secure i would think Hugh. The rivet diameters are narrower than the base holes that they are meant to cover and hold onto!!!! I would think that this base would come loose with the lightest of touch!!!

John, the underside of the front bumper and the front left mudguard is the same rogh. I think it was one piece when somethig happened.

The big question are the rivets.

I think we can say that the axles have not been tampered with, meaning that the baseplate assembly is genuine. The question the becomes whether this particular baseplate was originally paired with this bodyshell.
Is the body casting correct for these wheels according to Nick's catalogue? If so, then I would suggest that the baseplate simply came loose sometime in the model's life. If not, we should conclude that it is a baseplate swap (albeit one with a genuine SPW baseplate).

Hi Peter, I do see your point but it's a difficult one because of the poor rivet heads which look damaged and they do not protrude over the baseplate. Is the baseplate held on firmy? are there any signs of glue on the rivet posts? Check out the wear on the black paint around the rear rivet also. Of course these baseplates can become loose and it's possible that a past owner refitted the original baseplate and in doing so damaged the rivets heads.

Baseplate shows signs of long term storage in a very damp place but decals dont. I suspect this is a genuine baseplate matched up to a better condition body which has decals that are not wrinkled by damp that has damaged balck paint on base.Also see what appears to be signs of touch up metallic blue paint around front bumper
