Box Rarity Guide

Post by hydra427 »

Hello, I just saw the box below go for over $350.00 and I am curious if anyone has ever done a guide on the rarity of boxes? Which boxes demand a premium? Any help or guidance would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks in advance, John

$350, wow. I knew this was the least common of the Pickfords boxes but not that rare. I got mine last year, admittedly not as good nick, but was only £20 including a mint model!

The most expensive I have seen of late was a 55 DUKW in D box which I think went for around £800.

the E type boxes you have with the 36C opel...i think the first issue box is the hardest of that models E type

you should also add the F type box of the 36C opel as that is the hardest of all the 36Cs

also add the 17D hoveringham tipper the last E type box they issued with a small dump truck on the front showing it can tip

the 8E mustang F type box isnt very hard to get...the one thats the superfast box without the superfast script is very hard to get
Please use a web hosting site (like photobucket) to store pictures so you can post them here, using attachments makes it hard to view the pictures when you have to scroll to see them. Seeing comparisons of models is hard to see with attachments too.

As Dan says, I think only the first issue type E box for the 36c Opel is scarce - showing the dark green model, and smaller/short box size. The larger size E boxes showing turquoise or gold models are quite common for 36c.

Similarly, the first issue of the 12c Landy showing smaller green model is a scarce type E.

It seems to me that there are quite a few variations of type E boxes that are uncommon like this - where there are 2 or 3 box designs, with one rarer than the others.

It would be really good to determine which type A, B and C boxes are rarest, but I suspect this might be quite a dark art. I have opinions about some, such as that B boxes for 19b MGA showing the MGA picture (rather than the 19a picture) seem to be quite scarce. Also the type C for 19b is one I've never seen in person.

I put more thoughts in a reply to the other post re: D boxes etc.

I'm also surprised by the $350 price for the 46b type E box - mine wasn't quite as cheap as tandyfan's, but nothing like as expensive as $350!

Cheers,
Gavin

List has been updated but still looking for more input. I will be doing a lot of research over the next week or so on the internet but this by far the best source of information.

Dear Mods,

Would this be a reasonable candidate for a sticky here for us box nerds? :ugeek: This sort of question comes up often and it would be nice to have as a reference...

Cheers,
Gavin

John,

I note you've added the F box for the 50c Kennel Truck - as this was the only box type that this was issued in, it is really quite common in general. I think the 50c box that is hard to find is the one without the 'Autosteer' logo. Similarly the F box for the 15d VW without 'Autosteer' is less common than the one with it.

Cheers,
Gavin
