I have checked my spare models if, by lucky chance, I have at least the model with an unpainted shadow after the spare wheel (as George showed us). By checking, I noticed that one model has more treads and the wheel is a little bit larger. It could be interesting to check the early models with the metall wheels for another variations.

Re: Different metal wheels on the models
This is really interesting. I have suspected something like this to be the case for some time now, based on what appeared to be shown in various Ebay listings (and not just where the 20a is concerned).
I think what we need to start off with, is the diameter of those two wheel types. That will then enable us to examine which models exist with the smaller wheels and which with the larger ones.

Re: Different metal wheels on the models
Nice catch. I like weird wheel variations, especially if the model has mismatched wheels. None of my metal wheel models seem to have anything odd, but I have a few mixed wheels plastic wheel models.
Re: Different metal wheels on the models
This is a known variation, anyway hard to find, 17a Bedford Removals Van without rear window and with MW ø9x18

Re: Different metal wheels on the models
The first use of this 9X18 metal wheel Antonin seems to be in 1957 on the front of the 2B Site Dumper, so it is a very tough one to find on the 17A that was discontinued that year. The earlier 8.5X18 metal wheels on the 17B are also tough to find because a decision had to have been made at Lesney to use the larger 9X18 MW on this one just before this new model was released in 1958. Because the 8.5 diameter wheels were continued on the 13 Wreck Truck, the 20A ERF Lorry, the 22A Vauxhall, the 22A & B Caravans, the 26A Cement Mixer, the 30A Prefect, the 33A Ford Zodiac, the 34A VW Van, the 36A Austin A50, the 37 Coke Truck, the 38 Karrier Refuse Collector, the 39A Zodiac Convertible, the 45A Vauxhall Victor, and finally the 51A Cement Truck, we now may be able to find any of them with the larger 9X18 wheels if we keep looking for them. Mixed metal wheels seem to be very rare, but not valued by collectors.
In all my metal wheeled models, I can only think of a single 10 A 'Error' Tractor that has two different diameter rear tires on the 3 wheeled Tractor unit that I have been able to find over the years. Even though they were just Toys, the earlier slower production at Lesney resulted in fewer 'Errors' on the metal wheeled models than the later mass produced plastic wheeled variations. kwakers
