71c Ford Heavy Wreck Truck

Post by Idris »

The NAMC’s “Catalog of all Series Matchbox Models” (first edition) has two label variations not explicitly included in Nick's catalogue: 71-3-d is a green windowed, red hook model with 8mm labels with "...left side blue edging very heavy and right side blue edging medium heavy...", whilst 71-3-d is Nick's variation code 12 but with "...thin blue edging..." to the label.
The AIM “1-75 Series Regular Wheels” catalogue (second printing, 1983), Stannard and Houghton do not list any variations not covered by Nick's cataloguing, whilst U.K. Matchbox did not examine the model.
No other catalogue has Nick's variation code 4 with the 7 mm labels. Can anyone provide a photograph of a line-up of the 9 mm, 8 mm and 7 mm labels?

Not sure if it should be called label size, more the size of the oval surrounding the Esso.(unless I am totally wrong)
Oval sizes 7mm(top) 8mm(middle) 9mm (bottom).

You're correct, Jason. (Loose terminology on my part.)

I can't see this being mentioned before, but I noticed that my code 1 (amber, with the smooth bed/no baseplate text) doesn't have corner braces. I've only got 4 other models and they all have the braces. It's possible that this feature appears on the smooth bed version only but it might be worth others checking to see what they have.

Hi John,

I checked my amber window with textured bed 71c and found that it does not have the angled brace as shown in your picture. So, looks like three variations of the amber window one to find. Which means I still need two more! :o

I'll try getting a picture up when it is daylight (will be the weekend).

Cheers,
Gavin

Nice spotted John, I have also this corner without brace only by amber variation with the smooth bed/no baseplate text.
Interesting found Gavin, could you be so kind and make a photo.
There is another unlisted variation, I think I have mentioned yet.
a) without a side strengthening

Thanks Gavin and Antonin. Of course there could be a fourth variation as well (smooth bed, with corner braces) :) I must check the side strengthening on mine too.
