Help me pick the wheels!

Post by Tinman »

Here's a sneak peak at a little custom I'm working on. It's a GMC dropside wooden stake bed. I've opted for a chrome grille and bumper, smooth roof and the Portland Cement livery. The load is ceramic and is two banded pallets of brick.

What I need help with is the wheels. I can't decide on the BPW or the older metal wheels. BPW are on the front and Metal wheels are on the rear to see how they look. Please take a gander and tell me which wheel you think looks the best.

My vote is for the black ones.

If you are going for realism, surely black is the only choice? Metal wheels are great, and are needed for restorations, but are pretty useless if you are striving for an authentic look IMHO.

Nice job on the custom - where did you get the loads?

Thanks Martin! One vote for BPW.

The bricks come from my local Model Railroad shop. They come as unglazed ceramic and you have to paint or finish them yourself. The pallets are molded in plastic and come in a wood color.

Very nice job indeed! Obviously black is realistic and looks smarter, but the metal wheels are kind of nice, it gives it a feel that it's been driven through an old brickyard, so that's what I'd choose :D

I'll go the black as well , As a side bet i suggest a yellow hub and black tyre setup ? BTW , It looks good . I have been looking at one here wondering what to do with it .

Black seems to be leading by a good margin. I considered a wheel & hub (the larger wheels lend themselves well to that combo). The stock yellow hub is a darker (more orangish yellow), I will have to paint the hubs same as the cab/chassis to make them blend in a pleasant manner.

Anyone else think a tire & matching hub combo would be good?

Here is a Mercedes truck with matching hubs and tires:
