Something fishy going on with this seller on eBay!

Been bidding on a MATCHBOX E TYPE JAGUAR NO 32, and it finished yesterday evening!
I was out bid and I didn't mind as I was not sure I wanted it anyway.
Now less then 24 hours later I get a SECOND CHANCE OFFER for my maximum bid...?

So I checked out the highest bidder, but ebay doesn't allow a lot of information for the buyers protection, Fair enough.
Still the information you get is on what categories he is bidding, and its all the same "Matchbox & Lesney" and what time before the item ended, and again, its all less then 1 hour before the item ends, and there is a lot of them, in the 30 day history he made 24 bids on separate items, some even 2 bids! just makes me suspicious that he tries to get out the MAX of his items.

BUT I'm thinking that he has 2 accounts or has a friend somewhere else bidding on his items to get the maximum bid out of them, if his second account or his friend wins, then they offer it to the second highest bidder for there maximum price?

Anybody had something like this... or I'm I just need to ignore it and buy the item for my maximum bid?

Cheers.

The last hour of auctions is where the greatest activity happens. When I'm going after beaters on ebay, I always make my bids within the last hour of the auction and sometimes make two or three bids in that time frame.

This has happened to me... I don't bother replying it's fair to be outbid but when they do this it's obvious that they are bidding on their own items

TINMAN. I do the same as you. Bidding at the last minute. But not every day of the minth!
FIXER. Do you think I should report it to ebay. But will my name and feedback be in danger.
Just think this is not fair and how many people have been scammed out of there money this way.
I have send second chance offers to buyers, only after a non payment and ebay case. Not within 24 hours.
A second chance offer is only when the item can be doublicated. Like a new one in packaging or when the first buyer hasn't paid and a ebay case has been closed!

Just think its unfair I'm afraid.

I wouldn't bother reporting it let the seller get his ebay fees without the sale, if it's the same bidder /seller combination then they are trying it on... I usually bid in the last few seconds hoping not to encourage earlier bidders to raise their bids if I win great if not then it's worth more to them than me

There's plenty of reasons for offering a second chance soon after the auction, On Sunday, I had a buyer click the buy-it-now and pay for the item (It was set for payment due when buy-it-now was selected). Not ten minutes later, the buyer informed me they made a mistake (they didn't read the item description until after buying the model  ). I refunded their payment and re-listed the item. Had someone bid on the auction, I would have sent a second chance offer. That all would have happened in the first hour after the auction ended.

This is not a one off occurrence. Nearly all of my second chance offers were sent because the buyer asked to be released from the sale due to some error on their part. As a result, nearly all of my personal experience with second making second chance offers are well within the first 24 hours of the item's sale.

Just found a good article on the net about it and describes exactly what I have encountered.

I had something like this happen once. It's an auction. The whole idea is to find the market price and the winning bid is the highest anyone is prepared to go.
If your then offered the item as the second highest bidder then there is something wrong! I just reported it straight away.

Cheers Steve

The article is interesting. That's exactly how I bid on some items, nip away and find what looks like the other persons top bid ... then snipe the item. Works about half of the time. There are people who shill bid, but it's difficult to have two different accounts that ebay hasn't linked as being the same person.

On the other hand, if the item is still within a range you are willing to pay and you really want the item ... then just buy the item. Or, like the article mentions, just let it go and buy the next one that comes along. However, if ebay hasn't found a link between the seller and the bidder, then it's nearly impossible to prove shill bidding. Ebay/papal does have automated tools to link accounts: Same computer (or device), same bank account, same credit card, same address and same phone number to mention a few. It's harder than you think to shill bid your own auctions, but it can be done and it does happen. Does it happen for a few bucks? Not likely worth the effort, but $40, $50 or more dollars and it might begin to pay off.

While there might be something going on, there is a greater chance that someone just wanted it more then you then quickly changed their mind for whatever reason. Over the years, I've run into lots of people repeatedly bidding on the same thing I'm looking for. Some auctions I bid on and won may have been shill bids. However, if I won the item, it's because the final price was lower or equal to what I was willing to pay. Shill bidding, so what, I got the item I wanted within my limits for that item (first crack or second chance, mattered not to me). If you think you've prooved shill bidding, then why waste the thread. Post the auction link and out the cheater!

This very same second chance offer thing happened to me at the weekend a few hours after an auction had ended the seller sends me a second chance to buy the model at my highest bid. It was a seller in Greece.

I wont name him as i have no proof that there was anything naughty going on. I just seemed a little odd that i was the second highest bidder and lost the auction only to be offered the same model hours later. :?
