74a Mobile Refreshments Canteen

Post by Idris »

I cannot find any unlisted variations in:
- NAMC’s “Catalog of all Series Matchbox Models” (first edition),
- AIM “1-75 Series Regular Wheels” catalogue (second printing, 1983),
- Houghton’s “Definitive Guide to Matchbox Toys” (2007), or
- Stannard.
The U.K. Matchbox analysis (Vol. 3, no. 11, Jan 1980, p210) is rather below par, with different base colours being acknowledged but then frustratingly dismissed as mere shades. However, there does seem to be one variation (no. 7) not captured by Nick. This is listed as a silver-bodied SPW example with thick hatch supports and the original (i.e. non-rivetted) base (presumably square foot). The wheels are notes as "knobbly", which seems to mean either 9 x 20 or (more likely) 9 x 24. This would slot into Nick's variation table between codes 18 and 19.

Hugh, I'll post this link here to a thread I put in the 1-75 forum detailing a 74a I found at a recent toy show that is similar to Nick's code 14 but with different hatch door supports. If it is not appropriate that I note it here please feel free to make changes. It seems to me to be an "unlisted" variation.

I'm sorry, Nick - I only have a code 7 version so far!

Hi Kay, I seem to remember you mentioning that you had a variation that was unlisted because it had a rounded foot, I must have been dreaming lol.
Thanks for getting back to me.

This page has now been updated, Thanks Greg. Your new variation has been added at no 14, the old no 14 has become no 15 etc.
