With only the one exception the rest of the box, including information on the end flaps, appears to be the same. Is this a known variation and if so, are there other models that also lack the same red box around the number?

Yes, this appears fairly commonly.
How ever some model boxes are probably harder to find than others so you would need a box expert to tell us which are the harder ones to find.

The variation without the frame around the number is the last I type box variation of this model and was available only for a short time in late 1974, before the Streakers livery was introduced with its associated J type box in early 1975.

This one is therefore somewhat less common than the two earlier variations with or without "NEW" above the number and with the frame. However, I do not think there are many collectors who would be willing to pay a premium for it.

Many models' I type boxes came with those same variations, i.e. first with "NEW" and frame, then without "NEW" and with frame, and finally without "NEW" and without frame. The relative scarcity depends on the respective production duration, which varied between models, so it is impossible to generalize.
