Hello tinman, love your restorations, are you replacing the wheels with better examples from other 'Beaters' or have you discovered a way to re-create the 'Hot foil' method.

Ghosty, you've had a few too many champagnes today, i think you should be referring to Dave rather than Tinman. Get Marmaduke, your Butler to bring you a wee coffee there's a good chap!!GHOSTHUNTER wrote:Hello tinman, love your restorations, are you replacing the wheels with better examples from other 'Beaters' or have you discovered a way to re-create the 'Hot foil' method.

On this model the axles were so rusted I had to pilfer wheels from a similar vintage Matchbox. Hot foil sounds interesting!GHOSTHUNTER wrote:Hello Dave, are you replacing the wheels with better examples from other 'Beaters' or have you discovered a way to re-create the 'Hot foil' method.

Re: Capri joins Shell Racing Team
'Hot Foiling' was the process used by model manufactures to give the effect of 'Chrome' plating on wheels and smaller trim items. In the case of wheels, freshly moulded wheels are pressed into sheets of really fine foil and because the wheels were still relativley hot but not melting, at the point of contact, the foil would stick under gentle pressure by the machinery, when retracted, the wheels are left with their central area, looking like they are 'Chromed' and that is what you see on matchbox models fitted with 'Superfast' wheels.
Unfortunately, playworn and 'Beater' models tend to have this effect looking rather dull and grey, with extreme cases actually worn away and so far, I have not seen any easy way of replacing the effect, so replacement is certainly the best method during a full restoration such as you are doing.
