The semaphores prevailed in Germany until 1957, when they were replaced by indicators. By then, the Beetle had the rectangular rear window.
The reverse logic is, that all oval window Beetles had semaphores.
It looks like the example I have is a late one what with its spun wheels.

The Beetles that were sent Stateside had indicators after 1955 (the "bullet" type also used on Buses and Karmann-Ghias). Some European countries got Beetles with semaphores until 1959.

I had a '55 VW with canvas sunroof and semaphores. They still worked great. I did the proverbial body off pan full restoration on her in the early 70's. Kept it for a few years and got a pretty penny for the car when I sold it. Wish I still had it today.
