The colours the real cars were painted are just too depressing.

First .I was wronge its not a full Dinky ,its a Dinky /CIJ mash up..

Second .Is that Austin in pink not Lady Penelopes shopping car surely.

Yes, it took a lot of experimenting to achieve something I think looks fairly close to factory, or at least conveys the spirit.
The most important thing is to make them not too good. If you make them too good, they don't look right.
That's why I repaint old originals. I find the Atlas repops oddly soulless. Sterile. Like 3D renderings of old Dinkys.
Look at the not so good paint separation on the Polizei Kapitän, or any other two tone model, while we are at it.
I can make that razor sharp, but Dinky didn't, so I don't either, because it would look wrong.
Always strive for not so good. Always remember Marcel van Cleemput's words: If it's mint, it wasn't made by us.

Now for the actual technique.
On the bare casting, I use etch primer from the rattle can, followed by white primer from the rattle can.
The actual colour is acrylic paint - not lacquer! - from those 50p artist bottles. They can be mixed to your heart's content.
Any colour is possible. I use screenwash as a thinner and blow them through an airbrush.
Don't worry about the blue tint of the screenwash, it completely disappears, even if you use it with white paint.
The colour coat is followed by two to three coats of 1k clear lacquer. That's the newfangled stuff for real cars. Yes, 1k, not 2k.
That's it. There is no polishing or sanding involved whatsoever. To the contrary, I often find them a tad too shiny, but I'm confident time will rectify this.
Another nice side effect is that these paint jobs literally cost Pennies.
