If the base swap is doable without cracking either casting, then I think I could live with knowing the base and axels and wheels are original and the top paint and decals are original. I think I'd look at it as being similar to doing a tire swap on plastic hubs.
I'd be very un happy if the casting were to crack.

Portions of the original side decals are still in place under the paint. Some of the text is still legible. I would guess both brake fluid and nail polish remover would remove any remaining decals.

There is a bit of paint on the wheels. I think It's been reported that brake fluid doesn't effect plastic wheels. Before I touch these, I will test other painted samples from my scrap yard box.

To expand on this a bit, I can live with a base swap (if the base can be swapped without drilling out the rivets or cracking either casting) but I understand others may have different standards. So I would / will label it so the base swap is clearly identified. And in the spirit of full disclosure, I will post photos of the updated model after any alterations is.

now that's a true collector IMHO
