That's how they all look underneath the thermofoil.

Never knew that as I've never stripped one, does that only apply to the pipe trucks and presumably the Douglas /pointer tippers

Since the 32 tanker, the 10 pipe truck and the 51 tipper all use the same base ... yes, that's how they all look without the thermofoil treatment.

The white bases were never intended to have the chrome treatment and are molded out of white plastic. All those destined to have the thermofoil chrome treatment are this greenish gray color. My guess is that this is a random (and not so common) error with an unplated base slipping through or making it's way into a tin of finished bases. With the three models using the same base, it's difficult to imagine them running short and using unplated bases to finish out a run of models.

The fourth Leyland truck (the site hut truck) uses the same basic base but is different behind the front axle. I'm not sure why they would not work the site hut truck's design to use the same base as the rest. The only reason I can think of is that it might have been cheaper (in the long run) to use less metal and more plastic. They certainly made enough site truck hut trucks to pay for the cost of the additional base mold (and plastic has always been much cheaper then metals).

We did point out on this board or the old one, a faker who was selling Yesteryears without the chrome plate as pre pro models. He sold quite a few of his bleach dipped fakes if memory serves me.

The axles could also prove if any harsh chemicals were used.

I can not see any thing different on the wheels, axles, paint or the blue glass. Tinman this is not how they all look like, I have seen some broken ones that was made of green plastic in one dark green color.

I will try to get a pipe truck playworn and do the bleach test, maybe it is possible.

Of course, I don't have yours in hand ... but, I've worked with a hundred or so damaged and broken bases off these trucks. While greener tones seem more common, they range in color from a distinct green to a gray color, sometimes with only hints of green (and all the shades in between). When the plastic is broken, it seems to ramp up some color that isn't there in an unstressed example. A lot more of these will need to turn up before I consider it anything other than a production error/anomaly. There does not seem to be any serious consistency in the raw plastic color (nor would there be any real need for that) since they were destined to be covered up in thermofoil.

Tinman I agree 100% that this is a error piece. I was more not sure that someone can remove the tin foil that good without any trace on the rest of the truck. So there for I just want to try it out to see if this was what happened to this truck. I belive it left lesney like this, as an error piece as you described.

I agree with you and I too do not think it's been tampered with. It's certainly an interesting find.

hey guys...i was checking bases on the #10 and came across this one i had...i totally forgot about it when this thread came about...its like a brown plastic...for some reason the chrome is missing...just wanted to chow the color plastic that was under the chrome...in the second pic of the base there is paint on it and under the paint it looks like the chrome is still there...however or whatever removed the chrome the paint on it make the chrome survive...here are some pics...would the sun change the color of the plastic to this color or do you think this is the color of it originally
