By the first model was never thinking about problems with the assembly (eg. assembly nose by 5b doulbe Decker, decal guides by 41a, 59a were added later). Therefore, I consider the recess (for quick assembly) on the bottom of the body by 41a as very implausible. Moreover, this recess is constructed more as a design decoration and not as an assembly aid.

I would suggest that the recess gives the impression of having been created in haste, implying that it was created in order to solve a problem which had suddenly presented itself rather than as part of the original design (in which case a much higher standard of craftsmanship would be expected).
Although marketed as toys, I would be surprised if it could be proven Lesney took such a liberty with design as moving the exhaust to the opposite side of the model.

Perhaps the recess on the right side was just a mistake. Originally it was supposed to be on the left, but if you rotate model 180°,it is on the opposite side and when you insert it into the mould there is a mirror image. On which side of the mould is the recess now  :?:  ?????? I can imagine a young engineer at Lesney, who is during working hours dreaming about beautiful girls and fast cars, that he did not much care on which side should be the recess for the exhaust in the mould.

Point taken, Antonin, everyone makes mistakes. However, this still doesn't explain the apparent clumsiness/crudeness of the modification.

I think, bad mould was produced and there was no money and enthusiasm for a new one. And perhaps the idea with an exhaust was from point of technology too complicated.

In the absence of any conclusive evidence either way, I think we may need to agree to differ on this one, Antonin.

Hugh, maybe now is not essential if the exhaust was supposed to be on the right or left. Rather, I wonder if anyone has a model with the base plate with the side protrusion, and what was the purpose of this protrusion.
