Also, Brad's MCF site uses the same format (someone correct me if I am wrong). The phpBB logo can be replaced with the old header photo from your Lefora forum as well as a sidebar added (and other features).

Now that would be nice, I got very attached to those features :D

Hello idris,

The picture below is exactly what I have on my PC during the method of saving thread links and the key word here is 'Links'. What is happening is that the actual 'Links' to the threads on the 'LEFORA' forum are being saved and when put into a folder, copied over to a completely different computer, opened up, you can view virtually everything from that forum, in the threads and topics. What you don't see are the pictures if those pictures were sourced from an on-line photo sharing site like 'Photobucket', but if your computer is on-line, you do see the pictures, within the thread or topic.

So far I have saved tinman's restoration topics, Landy's journey, U.S. Matchbox collectors club newsletters, Matchbox boxes & blisters, 1-75 casting show and some of the superfast castings topics.

Regards,
GHOSTHUNTER.

...nut surely if you are only copying links rather than content, this approach will fail when (not if) Lefora deletes the old forum?

Hi idris,

Yes, I expect this will be the case, so while it is still active, save what you can, what we can or what I can.

Motorman tried this save method but was not too successful and has asked me to save some stuff and I will try to 'PM' him a message that includes that stuff, if he gets it and can view it, then that's fine, he can make screen grabs of the important info he wants.

Lol,

I'm not sure I understand what this Save Link As idea is supposed to do. As far as I can understand it is creating a copy of the thread, which is a good thing I suppose if Lefora do decide to delete the old forum. But, the copied page is Lefora's copyright, so actually posting it anywhere would be a very dangerous thing to do.

It certainly couldn't be ported over to the new forum - databases simply don't work that way.

But if all people want to do is save a copy of favourite threads for their own personal use, it is a good enough method.

Iv'e been on the 'LEFORA' forum just a while ago and Nick's link to this new forum is still active, this is how I have got here to type this.

Save link as...is saving the link to a thread, that does save all the content, all the questions, answers and comments within that thread and when you save it to another place on your PC or a memory card, you can view this material as if you were still on a forum. Because of how Lefora have handled the pictures, the save method does not save them, but we could not see the pictures anyway, but if the pictures were linked from a 'photobucket' type site and the PC you view the saved threads on, is on-line, you do see the pictures.

Idris in an earlier post suggested that when Lefora close down that forum, none of the saved thread links will work, this may well happen, but I mentioned that while it is still active and anyone using Google chrome can use this save method to secure important information, they should do so and as I mention above, you can still read the threads, on a PC, off-line.

Regards 'Photobucket' and 'Imageshack' on-line photo sharing sites, if the link to those sites is saved within the text on any thread, I.E., in someones typed text posting, about a variation they are telling us about, then quite possibly all pictures may be viewable again once Lefora is off-line, something I can not try until that site is dead and gone.

Here are two examples of a saved thread link.

This is how they look on my PC, the top example is with the PC 'on-line' and the bottom one with it, 'off-line' and the picture is still there, suggesting the PC is showing the picture from a 'cache' memory, but this is not the case, I was aware of that and closed everything down and reopened the folder later. If the pictures were sourced from 'Photoshack', (my contraction), then the picture would not be seen, but all the text would remain.

It will be interesting to see if this still works when the 'LEFORA' site has gone, the fact that what you see in the image below can be saved onto a memeory card and viewed on a PC, nowhere near the internet, hints that it will.

Who's Online ?

Post by GHOSTHUNTER »

This screen grab is from within the last Ten minuets or so, if just a couple of members keep visiting the Lefora forum, it will keep it active, so members can save pictures etc.

Pictures still seem to be OK.

Only photos hosted from Photobucket seem to be OK, many of the ones posted directly to the site are a jumbled mixed up mess!
It might be time to start my "Bucket List."
