I'm an IT guru of sorts - the problem I've had is directly related to the database that houses the forums with a "too many connections" error displaying - this means the site is so popular that the server is slowing down when it tries to serve the requested pages to so many users at the same time - this normally happens when the machine has insufficient resources (memory, processing power, available connections, etc) to handle all the database requests within the required time frame - when it runs out of resources it gives the error message. The version of Windows users are using should not be a factor in the slowing down of the forums, nor should the type of PC/Laptop/Netbook/Tablet/Phone they use.....

Sysadmin intervention is probably necessary to alleviate the problem and it might mean additional resources need to added to the system serving the forums which will no doubt mean more expense for Nick...

Technically you may be right, Ian, but i don´t think that our problem can be solved by paying more. I didn´t have any problems joining the side three weeks ago and then one day it started to make trouble. There must be a substantial increase in access to utilize the server in such a way. Did we get so much more new members in the last three weeks?

My guess is, that the hosters put one website to many on this particular server...

If I understand it correctly any new website gets an initial allocation of memory space, then as time passes and more data is used the site needs more memory allocating to it to accommodate. This should be a simple process of somebody from this site contacting the host company and asking them if this will fix the issues.

One way round getting more (Free!), memory, is to have a few 'Off Shore' websites with a link to them from the forum. Sections that we have that do not require huge amounts of memory or space such as a 'Casting Show' can be transfered to an 'Off Shore' freeing up the space and memory on the forum.

Any free website maker can be used as an 'Off Shore', this is how I do it with my own website, I have the main site and links to Three or Four other sites, the only provisio, the sites must be visited within every 60 Days or they lock you out!!

Well in a sense paying more means you get more resources - I don't know if Nick has a dedicated server or a virtual server, or is just one of many sites hosted on a particular machine but if he needs more memory or resources of another sort then they will attempt to charge him - however you are correct that it could just be too much load on a particular machine at the hosting end.... either way it still need Sysadmin attention

This Site is a free one to Nick I believe, so contacting them and complaining too much is out of the question at this time. When Nick's site and our Forum became one of the most active sites at LeFora, problems with them led Nick to move here (HostGator?). Too much data, not enough storage, too much use, I expect everyone here has hit the truth in all the above comments. Perhaps isolating the Guide Site away from our Forum has already been done?? Great idea Ghosty, Nick will have details. Adding more space any way we can for free might prove difficult, but Nick can use all your help and ideas to do so. Thanks for all your above thoughts on possible solutions.
I can still report the same error messages as yesterday for me, but today I can see who has written each Post which I could not do yesterday. Things have improved! Cheers! kwakers

Finally, site is working well for me.

Reason I asked, not been able to get onto any website all Day through my VAIO, or my Macbook Pro, every time I tried it timed out and told me the page was not available.

It is only in the last few Hours I've been able to get on the forum and I see I have missed some important postings regards the Opel Diplomat.
