I think this may turn out to be more of an overlooked variation than a rarity (c.f. 41a without decal location rings).

Sorry Chris to overlook your contribution and thanks to Bert to point out on it . Here is a photo of three different variantions with the MW and FC-axles.
a) sand-tan
b) light tan
c) dark tan
I am not sure about the description of the three colours

Idris wrote: The NAMC’s “Catalog of all Series Matchbox Models” (second edition) has the final variation (40-1F) as "very dark red body, dark tan dumper, GPW". Since NAMC comments explicitly on there being shade variations of the red body (as does AIM), there must be quite a striking difference in colour. Can anyone confirm this variation (including the wheels, which I think must be 9 x 20 GPW) and also provide the trim specification?
Here is perhaps the photo of the variation which Hugh has mentioned (dark red body/red body)

Only one MW example in my collection, with Dome/crimp axles - has the tabs.

My only comment re: the colours is that the tipper colours are similar to the 50a. They also seem to show a transition from light tan to dark tan even brown with the lightest shades early issues, and the darkest being later issues.

Cheers,
Gavin

Hello Antonin and Dick the colours of this model could go on and on, here are 5 different colours for the tipper.

Also notice the Reds of the cabs,

Nice line up George, it seems that the model in the middle is the variation with dark red cab and GPW.

Given that there are a number of models that include ejector rings in their variation tables I thought this may be of interest as we have just about covered all aspects of the 40a.

I would not expect this ejector ring difference to be a variation worthy of being on a variation table but it is interesting from a manufacturing point showing how it evolved. The tailgate with recessed ejector is aligned to the one without the extension tabs.
