Now that's out of the way...nice grit spreader variation and look at that 'MINI-DINKY' Cadillac in White, looks good in the picture, what is the baseplate like, any fatigue or distortion yet!

sorry Kev don't know how I missed your post
the grit spreader is one I've been keeping an eye out for and popped up as a bin with two others in "normal" shades
the caddy hasn't got any fatigue that I have seen and apart from a little paint loss where the boot has rubbed on the body it also came with its garage/box

That's all right Reg, thanks for the update on the Caddy. These are very prone to baseplate warping, I have pictures of them even broken in Two which must be the final state of decay after not being able to bend anymore because of being fixed to the body.

Kev do you know what causes it and is there anything that can be done to help preserve them , I think it's a general problem as I have an Oldsmobile that is suffering fatigue on the body

Several things seem to be responsible and a metallurgist could probably explain better than I can. I smothered a 'CHARBENS' Rolls-Royce in 'WD 40' to see if that slowed down the process of fatigue causing lots of cracking to take place all over the model and so far it seems to have been effective, providing you don't mind your models having a nice coating of Water Repellent on all the metal surfaces!
I would not cover your entire Caddy with it, just the exposed areas, in particular the whole baseplate, just rub a slightly moistened cloth over it. A toolmaker would just use normal '3-in-1' type oil, but on model cars will not be good to handle and will ruin any card board packaging as it soaks in, nothing worse than cardboard and oil mixing together.

What we call fatigue is actually the result of lead precipitating out of the metal matrix and migrating by diffusion to the crystal boundaries where it oxidises, so forcing the crystals apart. IIRC, moisture is supposed to play a role in this process (probably by speeding up the oxidation of the lead), so WD40 should help slow down the process.

todays Sandown finds 20a with gpw playworn and a slightly bent rear axle but only £8

Kev any ideas as it has me stumped
