I have now looked into this matter.

Until now I had only ever used Firefox and Microsoft's IE and Edge browsers and never had any problem with them regarding the display of my website.

Now I have downloaded and tried Google Chrome at my place of work, and there, too, all pictures on my website including the thumbnails are displayed OK as normal.

Therefore I cannot reproduce the problem and do not know what to do.

I have also done a bit of Googling and found hints about some ad-blocking extension for Google Chrome which may cause pictures (perhaps within "<a>" hyperlink tags, like my thumbnails which link to the larger pictures) to fail to show up. That extension would have to be disabled.

Unfortunately I cannot find anything more specific.

If any HTML expert reading this knows anything definite what I can or should do to prevent this, please let me know.

I have an ad-blocker on ie11 and chrome. I just tried again and had no problem with ie11 with the ad-blocker enabled. I tried with chrome and it didn't work but after disabling the ad-blocker (adblock-plus) it was fine, no problems. So I think you are onto something Christian.

Sounds possible but that would then men some of the code used by Christian is the same as used on adverts for both to be 'Adblocked' which for me is very silly!

Thanks for the feedback, and I totally agree.

That version of Adblock-Plus for Google Chrome seems to block any thumbnail linking to a larger version of the picture, as there is nothing more to it on my website (just an "<img>" tag within an "<a>" tag), and it has been the same since I started my website some seventeen years ago.

Having to change every single thumbnail on every page would be a huge task, besides I do not know yet how I would have to change them.

Still any hint on what exactly I would have to do would be welcome.

One more question for all those who have this problem: is it restricted to only the adverts pages, or does it extend to all other pages on my website? I do not see any significant difference in the HTML code between these and the other pages, so I would assume that my whole website is affected. But if it is not, I will have to look for a difference which causes this.

Answering my own question, I think I may have found a possible explanation on another internet forum:

Versions of Adblock-Plus are said to block pictures which have the string "Ad" as part of their filenames.

Obviously this applies to the pictures on my adverts pages as adverts are what they depict.

If this is it, then I just need to change the filenames of the pictures on the adverts pages to something which does not include "Ad".

This now seems obvious, but I never thought about it before.

DUH!

I have just changed the names of the pictures on the page containing the Austrian ads (which are only a few) from "Ad" to "Pub". Please try this with the ad-blocker activated:

Thanks again. I have just changed the directory name too -

http://www.cfalkensteiner.com/Matchbox/ ... ustria.htm

- so maybe that did it, but otherwise I have to keep on experimenting.

I guess I should get that Adblock thing myself to be able to test its behaviour.

I am determined to get to the bottom of this, and I do think I am on the right track.
