The slide activates or deactivates the model's suspension. It was an attempt to simulate the hydraulic system of lowering real vehicles on their suspension for stability.

thats was the way it was early in the models run...it could slide...but later they changed it so i couldnt slide anymore...they still kept the opening with a colored slide...even though it couldnt slide anymore

Thanks for the explanation Kev and Dan. It would appear that money was no object at this time given this must have taken up a lot of costs in designing and manufacturing.
