Wow! These look cheap, at least for back then, as some modern ones look even cheaper! Were these a budget line back in the day?

They were obviously intended to be a budget line, as the "BR" prefix of the numbers cast on the bases stands for "Budget Range".

However, as they tended to be sold at small shops such as newsagents and stationery shops rather than toy stores or department stores - at least here in my area - , they were usually rather more expensive than the basic MB Miniatures range and harder to find too.

Going through some GTs I just bought and found the Flamin Manta with 2 different English bases.

Ignore the upper part of the base pic, its a production model, the pre-pro has a painted gloss black base.

Thanks, I have not noticed this before. One more thing to check!

Not a big surprise, as I believe two moulds each were used for the baseplates of all Super GT models. Some feature more or less obvious differences while others don't.

Is that a painted plastic base or a metal base?
