Actually, cut down Rollers were quite common as breakdown vehicles/tow trucks in the twenties and thirties.

That model is not that far from truth, as Hugh has indicated.

Rolls-Royce cars have been converted to recovery vehicles for some time. The car in this picture is a well known example among car enthusiasts and the actual picture is from the 1955 Norman Wisdom film, ''One Good Turn'' and the car is real, no mock up or special effects. Norman is sitting in an Austin J40 peddle car.
