When I started collecting Matchbox (as an adult) I bought a lot of group sales. Many of those cases included early Hot Wheel spectraflames which I gave to my son. He in turn had his own display shelves in his room which turned into a pretty good sized collection. His display looked good as he does them by color, not casting, so his wall looked like a rainbow. Recently he has packed them all up and stored them though.
As for the new styles, Hot Wheels had it's time when they were all crap too, in the past few years though they have came out with some very cool castings. Since I have a finite amount of space to display my collection (1 room) I have restrained myself from adding anything beyond the VW models, and 2 variations of the TV Batmobile.

I have collected Matchbox since 1964 and Hot Wheels from the beginning. I like them both and really favor Matchbox. There are so many other brands I will admit to as well. Insanity I am guessing.
