The "hoarding issue" is a personal fear for me. My brother is one of those unfortunate souls who is obsessive compulsive and hoarding has taken over his life (and home). I rarely go over to his house as it's more than I can stand and far too upsetting for me. Most of his house is very much like many in those reality TV shows. Junk is piled up everywhere. He has a detached garage that's packed wall to wall and floor to ceiling. He has out buildings stuffed full the same way and his yard is filled with hoarded junk of all manner.
For me to "save" something that doesn't have an active use or purpose is a big deal. I have no trouble throwing away most things and matchbox models can go in the trash as easily as anything else. Perhaps I am over compensating because of my brothers affliction. But, he was once pretty normal and it slowly grew into a huge problem.
I give him nightmares by telling him that if he passes before me, I'm going to have a crew clear out everything from wall to wall (in the house and garage) and put it into a rented compactor that's been brought out to the site. The out buildings will be torn down and disposed of (including all contents) and the junk in the yard will be cleared out by a front end loader. It's really that bad. So, yes, I can throw out a vintage Matchbox or two without a worry or care ... it's saving the broken and beat up ones that causes me worry.

thats a tough situation JP...i know i get very anxious when my house gets a little cluttered...especially when my sister and niece stayed here for a while a few years ago...they are messy and i am not...well compared to them im not...my mom likes a well kept house and so do i...so she doesnt have to worry much as ill keep things tidy...especially in the public rooms...private rooms are up to the person whos room it is...as long as it doesnt draw bugs...but my sister and niece moved back to florida so my house isnt messy anymore
while i have my boxes of toys they are neatly stored in plastic bins or in cardboard boxes...i may let a little mess happen in my room as im going through and sorting new acquisitions but i can deal with that until they are sorted and put away

It doesn't hurt to be a little ocd
it's easy for models to take over otherwise. I'm fretting at the moment because I've let things slip for a few months but I'm starting to tackle it now.

collecting everything has turned into fine tuning.
up to 2012 selling was blasphemy.
three years in and 865 positive feedback later I am on the roll.
not enough yet to break even because I collected a lot of junk along the way.
That said one man's junk is another treasure.
Couple years ago eagerly watched hoarding reality programs.
Up to that point I never even considered I might be borderline.
I see it can easily be cleared, but also get stuck on sentimental fluff.
2012 switched back to bigscale.
This also meant thinning out what I collected as simply no interest and constantly questioning myself why I bought it.
I also began to hate the collection.
Ok, i have a problem. i'm working thru it day by day.

Keep talking Richard, keep talking. Let it all out on the forum and it will get easier for you and maybe some of us can guide you in the right direction, for starters I suggest you get shot of all them old Rollers and Bentley models cluttering up your life, they will do you no good and just by chance, I happen to have a couple of empty boxes I could store them in for you...
Ghosty.

I find it hard to toss models out but I do occasionally. I sometimes take an old MB case that is in poor condition and match it with 48 or 72 beaters and sell it on craigslist cheap. Some new collector get a bunch of regular wheels for a dollar or two each. They are exited and I get rid of a small box of stuff.
