Mike,
It is a personal decision on whether to leave or remove the "license plate #". Personally, if it is easy to remove and will not incur any damage, I would take it off as I prefer models to be original as much as possible.
As Greg mentioned, the gold trim model is pretty hard to find-- especially since the gold trim doesn't always stand out that much.
I've had the gold trimmed model (below) for about 5 years and it took some searching to find one.

Interestingly...The Van has a plate off a London Bus shown here..The car I cant find........

Up to 1974..."LE"...is for use in Greater London, but from 1974 onwards, it was used for London North West areas.

The digit ('N') of "NLE" would have been the issuing authorities code letter, in this case one of the Licencing offices near to the Bus Depot at that time.

Personally I would leave the licence plate it suit's the model
