Antonin I have noted this crosshatch on both bases as well, I am sure this variation of base was shown on the old forum before it was shown on ebay .

Hi Jason
You have remembered me in old forum on the crosshatch variation, I have showed only one variation at that time, anyway, you were the first one.

Excellent work. I think the Unimog is underated too, it looks so much better dressed up and with a canopy.

I will do Dan. I hope to add all of the discoveries made here on the forum. I have just started the first chapter of the Matchbox book so I'm a bit busy at the moment.

Because of our discussions here, I also added that same alternate crosshatched base without any license plate or tow guides just last week Brad. I bought one of Lesney Legacy John's 10 pound boxes of Lesneys, and I swear he put that one intentionally right on the top for me to see first. I am smiling because there are so many more details to check on some of his beaters, it will take me weeks to sort through just this group. This is my first 'Beater Box' ever, after 50 years! Boy am I having fun with some of the models that are already apart. kwakers

Tinman wrote:This is really a great model and Lesney could have done so much more with it. Indeed, during the the SF years it got some other colors and Liverys (but those are sadly beyond the scope of my collecting). I do my best to increase it's regular wheel presence.
Part of my love for this truck is that as a very young man, I drove this wonderful machine (with a cargo box and not a dropside). It was light years ahead of the domestic trucks the US makers were producing at the time and it was a joy to drive.
Very nice indeed
Joe you always do such great customs with these Mercedes Trucks!!!

I just returned from the Carlisle Pennsylvania Car Show and Flea market earlier this A.M., and have the last suspected mixed crosshatch base variation Mercedes in hand. It is a mixed crosshatch base without tow guide lines, but the body of the Mercedes has the later extended license plate that is normally found only with the guide lines base. Brad showed us his Mercedes mixed crosshatch base with guides and no license plate, so now we know these mixed crosshatch base castings were produced when the changeover to the front towguide was being done.
The model I found is dirty and only in excellent condition, but just like Brad is with his alternate variation, I am very happy with this rare mixture of odd components out of the factory. kwakers
