What a shame! I think the colour cast would have been caused a problem with the white balance of the original camera, so it would be hard to reproduce. I find that copying the original picture and resetting the white balance can help decipher tricky colours. On a Mac, Preview has a tool that lets you choose an area that should be neutral grey and will automatically set the balance based on that. This is what I get with your original using the axle end as a neutral colour. I'm not sure whether I'd have been convinced either way, though!
