I will never forget the look on my Dad's face when he brought our GPW Taxi over to Show me at Hershey. He had seen it mixed in with some commons, quickly bought it from the vendor, then set off to find me. I just about fell over on seeing what he had found, and I guess I may never feel the need to upgrade that one in the collection. I just took another look at it, held it a bit, and it is a very clean one with only minor flea bites. The years have given me a new view on this nearlymint treasure......(Sorry Jason)
The use of these odd GPW on this Taxi has always fascinated me Nick. Thanks for your note here. Your input gives me some info to confirm their place in our codes. If the GPW are as hard to find on your side as over here, they had to have been done almost as a pre-release model. The earliest pre-production (Hardy) had no tow guide and plated bases. Could these plated base GPW been the first to be shipped to world-wide distributors in small lots as sales samples? The small quantity of rare survivors seen today seems about right, and they are not just a 'one-country' variation. The earliest versions we found in our local stores were the painted base style from the very first stock shipments. They were tough to find, so the switch back to plated bases was quick, just like the 75 Ferraris. If the GPW had been released after those painted base models, surely we would have found at least one still in a display, or in our extensive travels into Canada in their stores' back room stock. kwakers

Picked up this one recently, standard model but has never had a base fitted. I do like these unusual ones. J

This one is so tough to find Jason, perhaps yours should be swapped with George for his rare color 'A' casting display. It is a 'B' casting, but of the caliber of the earlier rares in his display, and even non-mint is impossible to locate. I still look at mine from Nick every morning and night. It is kept by my computer now rather than hidden away with others I have crossed off my 40+ year old 'Want List'. kwakers
