6b Euclid Quarry Truck
Re: 6b Euclid Quarry Truck
Thanks Bert & George for checking it. It looks like there is a consensus about the details of the variation with NO decal. We need more information about the variation with the silver trim. Hand applied/mask sprayed? Biff rivet round/chisel riveted?

Please, could somebody confirm this variation with yellow painted tipper rivet?Idris wrote:. In each case, the domed head of the tipper rivet is painted yellow in the first variation, and remains unpainted in the second.

Mine is with decals. (I'll check the other details when I'm home next weekend.)yellowfoden wrote:In your proposed listing I note the MS silver trim model you list with NO decal. In the past we have seen Greg (about May 2012) show an example but this was WITH decals.

Just trying to see if this works.
Re: 6b Euclid Quarry Truck
I was once of the opinion that the silver trim might be real. However, none of the ones I've ever seen were mask sprayed. Since all the ones I have seen varied in application, I chalked it up to the differences of hand applied trim (which all of them were). Investigation to the source of many of the ones with silver trim lead back to model railroaders as the source. An MCCH member once sold off six mint and boxed issues with crimped axles and silver trim. I bought one for myself and one for a friend. All had hand applied trim. I found out the source was from the widow of a model railroader and many of his mint and minty models had additional detailing applied. My opinion of all hand applied silver trim is that's it's owner applied at a later date. Since some fairly well known collectors have a hard time spotting actual mask sprayed trim, I've discounted the existence of the model until I have one in hand. If I could ever hold one in hand with mask sprayed trim, I would change my opinion about silver trim on these models.
I should also note, I bought first 6b when they were new on the display stand. It had crimp axles and decals. I personally detailed the grille (straight out of the box) in silver for my own model railroad layout.

It might be time to start my "Bucket List."

You could well be right, Joe.

Re: 6b Euclid Quarry Truck
I fully agree with Joe's findings as this was a popular past time for railroaders to enhance models just for the purpose of bringing more realism to their layouts.

The biggest problem with the silver-trimmed version is the chronology.
When I was collecting the the early '80s, a recurrent story was that the first batch of 6b Quarry Trucks were released without decals simply because the decals were not avaialble in time. If silver trim had been part of the model's concept, and was subsequently dropped for reasons of cost, then it would be reasonable to assume that those first releases would exhbit silver trim. However, all the silver-trimmed examples I have seen to date carry decals.
So, if the story about the decals is correct, this would mean that silver trim was introduced after the initial release, something which would be an odd state of affairs and, I believe I'm correct in saying, without precedent (although the 47a Trojan Van did gain a silver radiator grille towards the end of production)..
Are any pre-release advertsiments known (e.g. from Railway Modeller or such like), which could help clarify the trim and decal discussions?

Re: 6b Euclid Quarry Truck
I can't help with the silver trim, but this scruffy 6b arrived with lots of others (in the back row). It's Antonin's new code 6 or 6a - 12.5 mm back wheels, crimped axles, chiselled biff rivet, with pin brace but no cross brace. I'm not sure if it's yellow or dark yellow but it's just slightly paler than my 6c (heavily play worn but mine from new). There's the slightest trace of a decal on the other side but someone obviously felt they weren't improving the look of the model and scratched them off.

These pictures also show the durability of the 6b's wheels - these are hardly worn even though the back axle is bent and the truck has obviously seen much play. My own 6c is less battered but the wheels are much more worn.
