The artwork on those old boxes is so much more characterful than the photographs which followed later. The Holmes Wrecker is a favourite of mine. I seem to recall that the instruction sheet showed a rather strange way of towing a car, with the front resting on the back of the wrecker and the hooks on the car's rear wheel arches. I think trying that with a real car wouldn't do the bodywork much good - is that why they call it a wrecker?

...because of this.

When I was Young this model came my way (probably from my Dad during a Saturday and from the big Co-op we had in Town) and it was fantastic. The model was just brilliant, easily fulfilling my early appetite for Rolls-Royce collectibles.

I do not know if I still have that original first example, but do have more than enough these Days as part of the collection.

Headlamps on Corgi Toys were good as ''Fox'' has shown with the lovely Volvo P1800. Dinky were not quite so good with their 'Jewels' as shown on the Phantom V below.

Unlike Corgi the 'Jewels' were not mounted in a plastic carrier, so when Four are needed for such a model, each one had to be stuck in place by hand, result...wonky lights!

During 1970, Dinky retooled the headlamp bezels on the Phantom V to fill-in the empty area in the hope the 'Jewels' fitted better. The picture below shows the result on a later Phantom V. Note how the headlamps seem to be sitting further forward on this model than they do on the earlier model.

Dinky were indeed sloppy with the jewelled headlights fitted to some of their toys, and the glue residue which can be seen around a lot of them doesn't help. However, Dinky did have neat Corgi-style jewels on some items, like the Cortina and Holden. For the Phantom V they should have used the neat units from the Silver Cloud. Of course, by the late 70s they'd replaced the jewels with cast-in headlights.
