I know some french auctioneers that ask for 30% commission...
I remember the time I won some lots in USA with only 13% charges.

Re: Auction House Commission Rip Off!!
My mate Brett enquired about selling at Vectis and he has a considerable collection. So he got shipping from Oz, import duties, commission, VAT and then the problem of payment as being overseas and the new money laundering laws as anything over $10, 000 comes under scrutiny and his accountant told him he could be up for possible gains tax so is it worth it ???

Re: Auction House Commission Rip Off!!
Thanks all for the tips and updates on auction activities.
I think the days of getting a "good deal" on these types of auctions is becoming less and less..................
I will be very cautious in the future regarding these types of auctions.
Further, the original intent of Ebay back in the '90's was a great one and it's utility to the "common person" was very high if they were involved with buying or selling. For the most part, it has held up over the years (absent the sure % of scammers/cheaters that exist in EVERY commerce activity), but it will continue to move towards "pure big business" over the upcoming years and continue to lose more utility and luster -- too bad, but all good things generally come to an end over time..........................
Thanks,
Bill

Re: Auction House Commission Rip Off!!
The horror stories i have had via online auction houses (not counting ebay in this),the latest was trying to pay for my lots, three payments all refunded(via bank transfer),had to ring up and pay direct in the end,but all done in good humour, not so good was a large missing lot out of 11 lots, also a gift set with a missing car,i spoke to the auction house over 10 times and kept promising me they would look etc in the end i gave up,loads of times the gem was missing, even once i bid for my mate and he just wanted the head off an action man, when it came no head!
Picking up your items is a really good idea,a couple of times i have not been given the full lot and had to question the porter, the lastest was 12 boxed corgi, only one in the picture and tried to fob me off with that one,the other 11 were been photographed for the following timed auction!(i got them).i had a £180 lot that went missing at the auction house(got a full refund and free postage for next order),had one lot delivered to someone else who said it was rubbish and said they had binned it and only had two items left(got a full refund and free postage). The most i was charged was £176 for postage then alarm bells started to ring for me ,it was getting a bit stupid then,it has improved, unless the auction house does its own packing and post,i will not bid unless i really want it,then i use mailboxes(these do vary from place to place)
So my top tip is ,only use auction houses that post themselves, keep a record of these good auctions so you can use them again.
check your local auction houses try to travel a bit further than you would normally to give you more choice and pick up personally.
do your maths, hammer plus comission, plus internet charge ,vat on comission and charge, plus postage packing plus vat on pp,it adds up.
so why do we do it,well theres bargains still
this lot went for £12 hammer(i didn,t bid ) at a local auction house.

They already do. It's called the Global Shipping Programme.motorman wrote:It's only a matter of time before EBay hits winning bidders with a buyers premium.

The Green Van towards bottom left of picture looks very interesting.

I refuse to use Mailboxes anymore as anything posted to Oz hits the 100 quid mark for a few models. We whinge about Vectis but at least they ship one Yesteryear for 18 quid. Parcels to go have been good as well as Jentel but even they have whacked up the price now.

Mailboxes are trimming their prices a bit due to competition which is good, and like i said each mailboxes is different and somtimes the service is very good(newcastle i seem to remember was very good) but the postage cost is a major factor and the local bidders do have an advantage so i appreicate in oz its going to cost, and with the increasing commission prices every bid has to be thought through which usually means losing,i am buying less and less but still have the odd slurge.Moyboy wrote:Dave

I know this thread was about commission prices and they do vary and mount up but i would like to mention lacy knight and scott, there the postage for GB postage is £15 for up to 3 lots up to 20 kilos, any additional lots cost £1 ,so win 5 lots your shipping is £17,this however means their auctions are popular so its hard to win a real bargain but not impossible, the rule is shop around and do the maths.
