OK, back when I had a decent size collection and displays, sometimes I'd find the Kennel truck tops missing or loose from the truck(s). I would put tops on trucks at random.
I recall having these three on display: The white grille, the silver grille and one with dogs still on the sprue. Never paid any attention to the beds being smooth or rough or to the color of the tops. It came so late in the series that I actually had little interest in the variations of this model. Past 1965, many models from that point on failed to capture my attention (I guess design details, scale increasing in size and more plastic contributed to that).
When I sold off the bulk of my collection, the tops, the dogs and the boxes were paired together in no particular order. I'm as guilty as other of parts mixing.

your ending interest was just the beginning of me getting these toys as a kid...also i creeped into the superfast era with the transitionals...i didnt much care back then about the change over...i was a kid and toys were to be played with
i didnt have the regular wheel kennel truck but i had the superfast one...i still have it...no dogs but i have the canopy which is tinted

It should be mentioned the front bumper & grille also pops off and is easily switched. I've taken a few silver and white bumper/grilles from beaters and put them on nice trucks that had damaged or missing bumpers/grilles (more part switching
) and I never bothered if the beds were smooth or the canopys added were clear or tinted. I'm sure many others have done the same thing. Since the wheels are all the same size and the dogs are all the same plastic casting, the variation table could simply be:
Flat black base with silver or white grille, tinted or clear topper, smooth or textured bed.
Glossy black base with silver or white grille, tinted or clear topper, smooth or textured bed.
