We made it through the storm safely and we're mostly sound. As of about 10 minutes ago; all utility services have been restored for my neighborhood, however power and cable is still off one block away from us (and that is a large area still without electrical power). We made a short trip out to neighborhood shops, some food and supplies already restocked on the shelves and some shelves still completely empty. Gasoline/petrol is still unavailable anywhere close to me. I lost the fence around my backyard, and many tree limbs are down. Not much other damage to my home. Most of the neighbor's homes came through with only minor damage as well. We are very lucky to have such minor damage and to have electrical power and running water restored so soon. We have plenty of food (enough for a couple weeks) and gasoline/petrol enough to last for a week.
Now, we watch the reports as hurricane Matthew bears down right where my youngest daughter is living. She does not live on the coast and is inland about 100 miles. She will be staying at the Duke University Medical Center (where she works) until the storm has past (and perhaps be there longer if the situation requires). The storm is now only a category 1 and the medical center is a safe location. I have younger friends coming over tomorrow to help us with storm clean up, etc.
We are keeping a watch on the next hurricane that's following Matthew. Eleven years ago, we were hit by three back to back hurricanes in the one month and a total of four hurricanes for that season. So, we watch and keep prepared until the hurricane season is over.

Thank's Joe for the good news, glad you got through with minor disruption. Obviously we wish your Daughter comes through unscathed as well. Its good to have a big get together to help with the cleen up and I am sure there will be plenty of snacks and warm drinks for them, take care Joe, be in touch soon.

Same thoughts here. It must be difficult living with the constant threat of these storms.

Sadly, I have to report that we lost one friend during the hurricane. He died of a heart attack during the height of the storm.

So sad to hear that Joe, by the sounds of it the death toll throughout the region has been quite high with in excess of 900 dead in Haiti alone.
