Thanks for the photo - I had assumed that this was a card display (bit puzzled by "polished finish" in description).
All clarified now - can feel a woodworking project coming on.

Gary Galvin's web site on early Lesney toys has a good photo of one.
You might also find a good photo on the Vectis web site. I'm sure one or two have gone through there.
